ROETE GRADERING / TRAIL GRADING

Roete Gradering:

0 – 3 = Maklik
4 – 7 = Matig
8 – 11 = Moeilik
12 – 17 = Extreem

Totale Afstand:

A – Minder as 12km

B – Tussen 12 en 17.9km

C – Tussen 18 en 25kM

D – Meer as 25km

Totale Klimhoogte (Som van alle vertikale hoogtes):

A – Minder as 300m

B – Tussen 300 en 749m

C – Tussen 750 en 1500m

D – Meer as 1500m

Terein Kondisies:

A – Hoofsaaklik op goed onderhoude paadjies, met geen moeilike of enige tegniese hindernisse;;

B – Blootstelling aan moeilike hindernisse is slegs vir kort afstande van die roete (<20%) en met minimale of geen tegniese hindernisse;

C – Blootstelling aan moeilike hindernisse is oor lang afstande van die roete (21 tot 60%), en/of met meer tegniese hindernisse wat teegekom word;

Trail Grading:

Trails are graded with an Alpha Numeric indicator, e.g. ABC (6), where

The First letter grades the Total Distance

The Second letter grades the Total Accent

The Third letter grades die Terrain Conditions

The Numeric value is a calculated value, between 0 and 17, that categorises the trails in the more general Easy, Average, Difficult, or Extreme groups.

0 – 3 = Easy
4 – 7 = Moderate
8 – 11 = Difficult
12 – 17 = Extreme

Total Distance:

A – Less than 12km

B – Between 12 and 17.9km

C – Between 18 and 25kM

D – More than 25km

Total Accent (Sum van all vertical sections):

A – Less than 300m

B – Between 300 and 749m

C – Between 750 and 1500m

D – More than 1500m

Terrain Conditions:

Is an evaluation to indicate the conditions of the trail. It includes difficult obstacles like trail gradient, lose sand and rocks on the path, bundu-bashing, boulder hopping, and technical aspects like rock climbing, narrow gorges, ridges, and ledges, compulsory water crossings/swimming, etc.

A – Mainly very well-maintained trails, with no difficult obstacles and/or any technical obstacles;

B – Exposure to difficult obstacles is for short sections of the trail (<20%) and/or, with no or minimal technical obstacles;

C – Exposure to difficult obstacles is for longer sections of the trail (21 to 60%) and/or more difficult technical obstacles are encountered;

D – Exposure to difficult obstacles is for most part of the trail (>60%), and/or where very difficult technical obstacles are encountered. Hikers should be very fit, strong in the upper body and arms, and without claustrophobia, fear of heights, etc.

For Example – A trail with a total distance of 15km, a total accent of 740m and are mainly on a well-kept single track, with no difficult obstacles, will be graded as BBA(6).
